Schooling

Myth: I can’t stay in school and be a mum.

Wrong. Yes you can and it is your right to. Schools have to be flexible to accommodate your pregnancy and your parenting choice. This means flexible timetables, uniform allowances, etc. In reality this can be difficult to negotiate. There are very specific Education Queensland (EQ) strategies for keeping young pregnant and parenting women in school. Here is a link to the EQ website and search "pregnant". This will pull up their resources on supporting young women in schools.

Depending on your behaviour, attendance and compliance with school rules, there are times when principals find other reasons to exclude you. Seek some advice from your guidance counsellor, school nurse, youth support coordinator, chaplain or a teacher you get along with.

Or talk with Youth Advocacy Center about your rights.
